5 Reasons Why Women Should Travel Solo
I was just 12 when I went on my first trip on my own. Of course it wasn’t real solo travel, as someone was waiting for me at the airport, and my days were organized so that I would have my English classes in the morning and some typical tourist stuff in the afternoons. But none of my friends or family came with me, and for the first time I felt that amazing sensation of excitement, freedom, fulfillment and happiness that only a solo trip will ever give you! It was during those two weeks that I decided from that moment on, solo travel would play a big part in my life. And it has. I’m 25 now, and at least twice a year I leave for a new and exciting adventure with the best travel buddy: myself! So, here are my five top reasons why women should travel solo…
1. You’ll ALWAYS find people to spend time with you!
It’s been scientifically proven that if you’re a woman, making friends is 100 times easier. People just come talk to you and ask questions about your story. I’m not sure why it happens, but trust me, that’s the way it is. Whether it’s because we appear less intimidating, or maybe there’s a natural instinct that makes people not want to see a young woman alone in a foreign place.
2. Getting lost? No thank you.
Having travelled half the globe hasn’t by any means improved my sense of direction. I can get lost even on my way to the baker’s! The good news is, looking lost can sometimes be a good thing: people will come to you and ask you where you need to go in the attempt to save you from exploring that side of the city you really shouldn’t visit.
3. Free drinks? Don’t mind if I do!
When you’re travelling on a budget, you need to save every single penny! That’s when accepting one or two drinks offered by new friends comes into play. I can definitely say that all the drinks I haven’t had to pay for over the years have made my budget last a little longer, and allowed me to travel for longer.
4. Discounts? Yes, please!
One day I had to go on a day trip and the person who sold me the ticket asked me if I was travelling on my own and how long I had been travelling for. “It’s my fourth week”, I replied. The person said, “Four weeks on your own must be tough, and you look super young as well. You’re cool, you deserve a discount!” And that kind of thing is more common than you’d think!
5. You’ll be the new Wonder Woman!
Don’t ask me why, but in 2015 people are still surprised to see young women travelling on their own. The fact that you’re a solo traveller will impress people: they’ll have such a high opinion of you and they’ll start talking about you to their friends – in short, you’ll soon become a legend (just like Wonder Woman)!
So, if you’re one of those girls, currently in doubt whether you should get ready for your next adventure or not, I only have one tip to give you: GO!
