1-2-Tree: Earth Day 2016
“Our cosmic oasis, cosmic blue pearl, the most beautiful planet in the universe.”
At GoCambio HQ, we care about our earth. And we admire big movements, especially those that strive to accomplish great goals for our little planet.
With more than 10,000 members in 120 countries, GoCambio aims to make the world a bit smaller and a bit friendlier. With more than 50,000 partners in 196 countries, the folks at Earth Day Network are building environmental democracy and challenging, inspiring and inciting people to act and address climate change once and for all – our kind of people! Because GoCambio’s mission is rooted in the sustainable sharing economy, we’re proud to play our part in protecting the Earth for future generations.
It’s about collaborative consumption and mutual access, not flat-out possession. By sharing unused or even underused resources, it encourages people to ‘share’ rather than ‘own’. The sharing economy asks people to think twice about the decisions they make and the consequences they will have on the people and world around them. According to John Boitnott, “it brings awareness to green strategies” and more sustainable ways of living – which can only help our Earth for the future.
Now, just five years until Earth Day’s 50th anniversary, find out how together we can dramatically lessen negative environmental impact.
What’s so special about Earth Day 2016?
On Earth Day 2016, the landmark Paris Climate Agreement is to be signed by the United States via President Barack Obama, China via President Xi Jinping and some 120 other countries. This treaty signing is part of an international endeavour to keep global temperatures from rising above 2°C annually; the Paris agreement requires measurable, scaling contributions from each participating country to lower emission targets.
“BROADEN – DIVERSIFY – MOBILISE”
The global theme for Earth Day 2016 is Trees for the Earth.” On average, our planet suffers a loss of over 15 billion trees each year. In observance of Earth Day’s 50th anniversary in 2020, Earth Day Network is pledging to plant 7.8 million trees – one for every person in the world.
Thanks to growing grassroot eco-activist and peace movements in the 1960s, in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, John McConnell proposed a day to honour the Earth and give visibility to the idea of world peace and environmental change. According to US Senator Gaylord Nelson, by 1970 momentum and national support from the general public essentially “organized [Earth Day] itself”.
“Earth Day is the first holy day which transcends all national borders, yet preserves all geographical integrities, spans mountains and oceans and time belts, and yet brings people all over the world into one resonating accord.”
It’s no surprise this international loved and lauded movement is one that GoCambio wants to be a part of!
How can I make my cambio be more GREEN?
Earth Day doesn’t have to happen just once a year. Why not organise an eco-friendly cambio with one of our nature-loving Guests like Luna Margot? Or Danila can teach you a spot of gardening, Miriam can help with natural building and Dan is excited to share her vegan cooking skills!
Plan language lessons that involve discussions on conservation, wildlife, or development theory. Debate and have dialogue on controversial topics such as climate change, biodiversity, reforestation, and food production. Instead of putting in another episode of Game of Thrones, watch If a Tree Falls, The Cove, An Inconvenient Truth, or Fern Gully.
Guest and host alike can volunteer and join local environmental efforts together. Tear down and prep for the weekend farmers’ market, getting involved in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group, supporting a nearby nursery.
Get outside! Go on a hike! Visit that park you’ve been meaning to. If you’re feeling ultra-inspired, climb a mountain.
All are easy, low-barrier ways to ensure your cambio is earth-approved!
Are there Earth Day events near me?
This Earth Day, grab your cambio-comrade and give back to the planet. There are hundreds of (often free) Earth Day events open to the public around the world; we’ve included 20 global examples of how can you participate on the day. We’d love to see our community of cambios in action, Captain Planet-style!

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” The Lorax doesn’t lie; in fact, he speaks for the trees. Get inspired and get involved this Earth Day!
