Startup Series: Why You Should Host a Designer
We’ve got thousands of Guests on our site with a whole host of talents. If you’ve got a love for cooking or a passion for football, then it’s pretty easy to select a Guest with the skills you’re looking for. But sometimes you might not know exactly what kind of skill you want to learn.
You’re the type of person who spends their time thinking up new ways to decorate your room. Maybe you love dressing up, taking pictures, scrapbooking, or spending hours on your weekends browsing Pinterest and watching YouTube DIY tutorials.
If this sounds like you, then we’re going to play matchmaker here and say that a designer is your ideal Guest.
What exactly is a designer?
A designer is really a very general term for a person who could work with completely different things – from illustration to home interiors, fashion to websites. But one thing designers all have in common is an eye for detail and a knack for being able to put things together in a visually creative and appealing way.
…one thing designers all have in common is an eye for detail and a knack for being able to put things together in a visually creative and appealing way.
So basically, if you’ve got the ideas and the motivation and just need help putting something together so that it looks fantastic, a designer is the person to help you out!
What skills am I looking for?
Designers are creative types and while some of them may have been to design school, others will be self-taught. What you’re looking for are people with a flair for creating things and who work with the kind of projects that you need a hand with. For example, if you’re looking for someone to help you design your new website, an interior designer may not be the best Guest for you, but a web designer will be. Likewise, a person who designs jewellery won’t necessarily be the best match for you if you need someone to design a business card.
Many designers will be familiar with general design concepts, but they will have an area of specialty. So check out their background, and ask any potential Guests to show you some of their previous work so that you can take a look and get a feel for their style.
Why should I host a designer?
There’s a myriad of reasons why you should host a designer, and it all depends on what your project involves. Some – such as redesigning your wardrobe – could take a day, while others are long-term projects that could require many weeks of work. Here are a few ideas:
To get a headstart on your Halloween costume

We know it’s not until October but there’s never any harm in being organised, right? Plus hosting someone with a background in makeup or hair design has the potential to turn into a pretty fun cambio experience!
There are so many YouTube tutorials on how to create the perfect Halloween costume and makeup. But some of us are not very skilled with makeup application and what is intended to be a vampire costume can easily end up looking like you were attacked by your five-year-old cousin with a crayon while you were sleeping. But with an experienced makeup artist there in person to help you, surely you can’t go wrong!
To help you with your business branding
You’ve got the business plan. You’ve got the vision. Now all you need is someone to put it all together visually and create a brand that reflects your company’s story and where it is headed. This is where a designer with a marketing background can really help you out. Before you fork out your life’s savings hiring an agency, consider hosting a designer on a cambio who will be able to take the necessary time to get to know you and really help you on a more personal level in a way that an agency can’t. They can help you with whatever you might need – a business logo, colour and branding, business cards and marketing collateral – even your company website.
Now, if you’re starting from scratch with no branding in place then all of this will take time, so we’d suggest that you host someone for a couple of months so that they can really get immersed in your project and complete it to your satisfaction (instead of having to leave halfway through and have another designer come along to pick up where they left off).
Definitely make sure you ask to see examples of previous work before you decide to host somebody, but do consider helping out someone who is relatively new to the field, for example a design student or recent graduate who needs to build their portfolio.
Will you also need someone to implement the design and turn it into a fully functioning website? Consider hosting a web developer at the same time and turn it into a collaborative project between people from different corners of the globe!
To feng shui your home
Not feeling the vibes in your house or apartment? Does it need a bit of redecorating but you have no idea where to start? Host a Guest with interior design skills and before you know it your oudated-looking space will be fresh, funky and feel like a whole new home.
Take your Guest along on a trip to IKEA and pick out some stylish pieces to suit your home, or head to a local nursery to pick out some greenery to decorate your windowsills. You could even check out a local art gallery together and find some artworks to hang on your empty walls. Whatever it is, hosting an interior designer will be loads of fun for both of you, especially as they might be able to offer you some creative ideas from their culture that will make your home a little more exotic and interesting, whether it’s a touch of vintage, Scandinavian minimalism, or an Oriental feel.
To makeover your wardrobe
If you’re more into Project Runway than Better Homes and Gardens, you might consider hosting a Guest who designs clothes. Who better than someone who works in the fashion industry to help you throw out your old clothes and turn your wardrobe into something a little more fresh and modern? It’s the perfect excuse to take your Guest shopping! You’ll have a brand new style and bucketloads of confidence in no time.
For those of you with a more vintage style, a trip with your Guest to a local second-hand clothes stores could result in finding some gems that your Guest can help you to make look as good as new. And don’t forget you can always breathe some life into old hand-me-downs of your own; get creative with old pairs of jeans and t-shirts, livening them up with some prints and creative accessories.
To overhaul your website
Does your website look like it belongs in the 1990s? It’s okay, every website needs an upgrade – even Google’s. You might just need to install a new WordPress theme, or you may need to redesign everything from scratch. Whatever you need done, communicate your needs carefully with your Guest beforehand so they know exactly what you want, and can give you an accurate idea of how long it will take to complete the job. This one could take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, so make sure you are able to host for a while if you’re looking for someone to do a complete do-over!
If the copy on your website also sounds outdated – maybe it lacks that unique personality you have, or fails to really connect with your target audience – consider hosting a copywriter at the same time and get the visual and written side of things polished at once!
To do some fun DIY projects
Don’t really have a particular project in mind but love to get creative and make things with your hands? Why not get stuck into a cool DIY project?
If you’ve recently returned from an overseas trip and are feeling some of the post-travel blues, your Guest could help you to create a travel wall or collect all of your memorable travel moments into a scrapbook. Then there’s DIY mugs, bookshelves, lamps, stickers, wine racks, candles or anything else you fancy making out of existing bits and bobs lying around the house. Have a browse through Pinterest with your Guest and get started making something that you’ll be able to show off to your friends and family afterwards. Anything is possible!
