10 Guests Who Can Teach You Russian
Did you know that if you want to become an astronaut then you need to be fluent in Russian? That’s right, once you’ve passed the entry requirements for NASA‘s Astronaut Candidate Program and gone through your training in International Space Station systems, extravehicular activity skills, robotics and aircraft flight readiness, you also need to prove your Russian language skills in order to be selected as an astronaut.
But the Russian language is not only your ticket to outer space; for those of us who’d prefer to remain safely on the ground, it’s a gateway to connecting with over 150 million native speakers in Russia and Europe. For me personally, knowing how to read the cyrillic alphabet helped me to read signs when travelling in the Balkans and my basic vocabulary enabled me to understand some basic Polish when I was working in Poland for several months. If you’re a literary geek then knowing Russian will mean you can read the classics by Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky or Pushkin in the original. And of course there’s the simple benefit of being able to connect with other people in their native tongue – a grammatically complicated one mind you – but a beautiful one. You’ll definitely feel proud of yourself once you can communicate a little in Russian.
Here are some Russian-speaking Guests who can help you pick up the basics of this language or improve your existing skills – for free!
